On the southwestern shores at the edge of the Indian ocean stretches a wonderous rocky coastline near the town of Yallingup. Located around 260km south of Perth, the small town is a convienient base within striking distance of three fantastic locations that are a must go for photography (although the coastline contains many more scenic spots that are less frequented by tourists). And what a coastline! Rock granite shores, wonderful sunsets over the ocean, and an infinite array of compositions for photography. One must allow days to explore and discover all the possibilities of this region - I have only just covered the popular spots.
Canal rocks is a series of granite rocks just off the coast that forms a narrow channel parallel to the coastline. It is possible to get safely high up amongst the rocks on the shore and take a sweeping panorama of the entire canal rocks during the day, and perfect if the Milkyway is arcing over the western skies at night. When high overhead, one can shoot south down the canal at a slight angle and catch the southern skies of Carina and the Crux. However, not many shots can be done close to the water as the slope is steep and treacherous in many places, and the lower down one is, the more the ridge of canal rocks dominates the view of the ocean and the sky.
A small trail leads from the car park at canal rocks to a short bridge that crosses over the waters to a nearby rock formation. It may be possible to capture the bridge, small channel, and the western sky, although I did not get the opportunity so far to try it. North of the bridge some exploration is possible on the rocky island, but it didn't offer too much more possibilities than on the rocky ridge next to the car park - and it was more difficult to traverse.
Just south of the car park are some more rocky formations, small gullies and rock pools. A photographer with a good eye might be able to obtain great shots here as well. One could spend an entire day and night at Canal Rocks at yet still not exhaust the possibilities at this location. It is a must go location - I will definitely return one day.
