Located two hours south of Perth, not too far from the famous Lake Clifton (and Thrombolites) is a little know lake called Lake Newnham located in the Yalgorup national park. There is nothing immediately outstanding about this lake, but what initially attracted me to take the effort and stomp through the bush to visit is, is the "land bridge" that appears in google maps that separates this one from a lake just north from it. It was my hope that I could stand on this land bridge and with a wide angle take a photography of both lakes either side of a thin strip of land. But this is not the case - whilst the land bridge looks narrow on google maps, its just wide enough to not allow this composition.
However, not to waste. The lake was dry and the night skies were mostly dark, although there is some light pollution. I had visited the location after a recent bushfire had gone through, and it was very eerie walking through bush where the trees were totally bare and black, and the soil was black, and not a single leaf could be seen anywhere. Walking through this at night time was an experience I'll never forget.
Whilst I was fortunate with this timing, once the forest green returns I can't imagine that there would be much about this lake that would attract many photographers. Certainly not to warrant stomping through the bush for 10 minutes just to get there. Also, there is no car park around the area so you have to leave your car on the side of the road nearby - something I was loath to do.
Summary Info
CATEGORY: Lakes
RATING: Average
ACCESS: 2wd, sealed roads, but about 10min walk through bush.
FEATURES: Two occasionally dry lakes.
CONSTRAINTS: 10min walk through bush, must scout in daylight first. Some light pollution south.
SUMMARY: You can almost, but not quite photography both lakes on land bridge. Area was burnt last I visited in 2016 which made an interesting session - but once re-grown unlikely to have much attraction.
