Surely the tallest lighthouse on the (mainland) of Australia would make a fantastic nightscape subject. Great oceans surrounding it from the east, south and west, easy access, beautiful structure - why would any nightscape photographer want more?
Well as it turns out, there is one big issue with this particular lighthouse - it spills alot of light.
Well, obviously - one might say.
The issue isn't so much the beams of light that is projected by the lighthouse as these sweep overhead, but rather between the projection lenses of the lighthouse there is a gap where the bright source of the light spills out omni-directionally. These immediately saturate the image - making it almost impossible to get a good nightscape. Perhaps from a much further distance along the coastline it would be possible to get the lighthouse in a reasonable nightscape shot - but close in - forget it.
A shame, for the lighthouse is lovely during the daylight.
Summary Info
CATEGORY: Other (lighthouse)
RATING: Poor
ACCESS: 2wd, sealed roads...BUT gates close at night therefore no access close to lighthouse.
FEATURES: Lighthouse, viewable in most directions if you get access.
CONSTRAINTS: Whilst the beams of light from the lighthouse don't interfere with camera, there are gaps between the lenses that allows the centre lighthouse light to shine in all directions including your camera and thereby saturating any long exposures (see image).
SUMMARY: As a picturesque lighthouse, there are few better (during the day). At night there is no access, views along the beach to the north-east have possibilities (but lighthouse will be small), and the light spill from the main lighthouse light is terrible limiting any ability for nightscape photography.
