Rosette and California Nebulas
by admin · December 30, 2018
In an all night session I managed to capture two targets, the Rosette nebula and the California nebula.
My first target was the California nebula. This image doesn't do this popular nebula justice. From Chittering near Perth, Western Australia, this nebula never gets higher than 22 degrees elevation in the sky so you are "cutting" through a fair bit of atmosphere. The raw images from the camera are saturated with skyglow and processing this away also takes away some of the finer detail and colour. I'll have to return to this nebula and shoot it using my Halpha narrowband filter, but I'll leave this for another night.
The Rosette nebula in the constellation of Monoceros is quite bright, and I often pick it up in my nightscape images as a small red "flower" lost amongst the band of the Milkyway. This image, however, was done through my telescope after my last target had gotten low on the horizon.
